ABOUT - LIFE IS HOW YOU SLICE IT

The ‘Avocado House’ is a dash of positivity in an uncertain world. Designed to bring daily joy for all to devour.

The concept encourages a civic-minded kindness where individuals invest in the happiness of others.

This project combines local creativity and heritage. Once the site of market gardens, West Perth’s vegetable days return in motifs representing the recent ‘smashed avocado’ home ownership debate.

THE PROJECT

After not receiving any rental applicants the current owner John van Bockxmeer launched a crazy idea running design competition on the Mural Artists page to paint the side of his house. Receiving more than twenty submissions, a small group of dedicated Avo enthusiasts voted for their favourite designs which were selected for commissioning. The local neighbours were excited to see the Avocado House restored as it had become quite dilapidated.

In November 2020 council permission was granted and painting began. An opening party launched the event and the #avohouse hashtag was born.

"The Avocado House has been a great project to be involved with. Seeing people react to the giant avocado's going up in their neighbourhood has been quite entertaining, It is great seeing people get involved in art and I enjoy being part of the process. Bring on the avo-selfies."
